The Eastern Pavilion of St Michael’s Castle
During the reign of Paul I, the name St Michael’s Castle referred not only to the building itself but to the entire imperial residence.
The pavilions serve as a connecting element between the castle and the urban buildings, creating a monumental impression. The lower floors are adorned with Fyodor Gordeyev’s bas-reliefs depicting scenes from ancient myths about the travels of Dionysus. The bas-reliefs probably featured allegorical imagery associated with Emperor Paul I. The construction of the pavilions was completed by 1800. They were designated as residences for the ladies-in-waiting and maids of honour of the Imperial Court.
After the Emperor’s death, the pavilions housed apartments of the Palace Department, as well as various service offices.
