Summer Garden
The Summer Garden stands as a cherished creation of Peter the Great, a jewel in the St Petersburg necklace of parks.
In 1704, Peter the Great ordered the creation of a large garden for himself, inspired by the renowned parks of Western Europe of the era. He personally drafted its initial design. The project was brought to life by both Russian and foreign architects — Ivan Matveyev, Domenico Trezzini, Jean-Baptiste Le Blond, Andreas Schlüter, Mikhail Zemtsov, and Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli — as well as master gardeners Jan Roosen, Ilya Surmin, Karl Schröder, Ivan Yakovev, and others. Within just a few years, the Summer Garden became a centre of political and official life, hosting court ceremonies and grand celebrations.
